The Journey

This is just a little background of where I started from and where I am now with my acrylic shelving business.

In February 2018 I designed my first acrylic riser shelf. I couldn’t quite find one online that fit my display cases and didn’t want to have a bunch of wasted space on the sides or top. So I went about designing something custom for myself, the “v1”. It wasn’t anything overly special or unique, it had to be glued to stay together, but it fit my space nicely and that’s all that mattered to me.

The “v1″ shelf model was 17.75″ wide, 10.25″ deep, and 5.5″ tall and had (x5) 1.5″ deep shelves. The shelf was custom sized to optimally display 1.5” perky boxes and 40mm spheres in my display cases.

Then early 2021 people started asking about the shelves and if I would sell them. I hadn’t thought about it up to that point, but I went back to the drawing board to design something better. I came up with a more optimized design, the “v2”. It had more support, but was still a little unstable and needed to be glued. So after some more tweaking, adding braces and notches, I came up with the “v3”. For a while I just had the one design, then some people started asking about custom designs. So I made a few variations to fit different specimen sizes and display locations.

I started selling my acrylic shelving in April 2021, and in March 2022 I started my LLC business, The Jinx Shelf Shop. Because of continued interest in custom designs, I kept tweaking my model and coming up with new variations. I even worked with my cutter (Delvie’s Plastics Inc.) to optimize the size of my shelves to minimize scrap/waste material from the acrylic sheets and bring down the overall shelving costs. Eventually I come up with the catalog that is available on my “Display Shelving” webpage.

Just like all collectors, I’ve continued to grow and improve my own personnel collection over the years. I’ve always strived to use my own display shelf models in my display cabinets to show people how sturdy and reliable they are. What does it say about a product you design if you’re not willing to use it yourself?

From April 2021 until now I’ve had over 170 unique buyers! So I just want to say thanks to all of you who’ve supported this project of mine over the years. Thank you for supporting my small business and trusting me to help display your collection and/or merchandise.
